“God is Light”

1 John 1:5 “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

John spent three and a half years walking around the countryside, cities and villages of Israel with Jesus. He watched Jesus heal sick people, give sight to blind people, raise dead people, feed hungry people and cast demons out of possessed people. John listened to Jesus as he taught the multitudes, confronted the religious hypocrites, and as He gave specific lessons to the twelve through his parables and also in intimate and personal conversation with them.

You might be envious of John and ask yourself the question, what impressed John the most about Jesus? Of course it is obvious, as you read the first verses of the Gospel of John, First John and Revelation. All three books make it clear that John first experience Jesus as God in the flesh. He was assured and convinced that Jesus is indeed the Son of God.

The first message that John wants his readers to know about Jesus is found here in verse five. John claims that this is the message that he himself heard from Jesus in those three years. He did not say he would try to explain this message but that he would proclaim it to them. He was not going to try and argue people into believing in Jesus.

What message did John proclaim? He declared that “God is light”! This takes us back to Genesis 1:1-3, where in the very first verses of the Bible we are told that “darkness covered the earth” and the very first act of God on the first day was to speak light into the world. Jesus proclaimed that “I Am the Light of the world.” John knew that wherever Jesus is, there is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”

Today the world is dark with evil, sin and wickedness! You and I have the great privilege and responsibility of “speaking light” into this darkness as we proclaim Jesus.

Jesus told us to “let our light shine” so that men would see “good works” and then personally experience the “glory of God.”

May the Lord give us grace to bring His Light into this darkness today! The darkness disappears when the light is turned on! You don’t have to fight it!

God bless!
