Romans 12:5-8 – You Have Been Gifted
We often say of a person who appears to be multi-talented and especially good at accomplishing certain things, “They are so gifted!” Well, I have good news for you! You are so gifted too! I do not think that we have even began to imagine how gifted we really are if we have been born again into God’s family. If only, by the grace of God, we would realize how, at the moment of our salvation, God’s Holy Spirit endued me and gave me “several” special supernatural abilities to serve the body of Christ, His Church!
Paul specifically teaches about the gifts of the Holy Spirit in three New Testament passages – Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 5. He lists at least, some fourteen to seventeen different gifts. He also notes that the Holy Spirit determines what gifts each believer gets (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)
When you study these three passages on spiritual gifts, you will notice that they can be broken down into three different categories, the sign gifts, the speaking gifts and the serving gifts. And it appears that from 1 Corinthians 12:11, that the Holy Spirit gives at least three or more gifts to every believer.
Both in Romans 12:6 and 1 Corinthians 12, Paul makes it clear that we do not get to pick the gifts that we feel would best fit us and our personality. We have no choice in the matter. God knows best where we should be serving in the church. And these gifts have nothing to do with our natural talents, even though we might us our natural talents to exercise our gifts.
