Today, Thursday May 20

“Jesus is the Head of the Body, the Church” Colossians 1:18-20 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

We often talk about “my church”, as if we own the church that we attend. I have probably said this as much as anyone. But honestly, we really need to realize that the church is not ours, but literally it belongs to Jesus Christ and it is His body.

In these verses we are reminded that Jesus is also the head of the church. We all know that the head is the place where all the instructions for the rest of the body comes from. Our body will not function without our heads. The head tells the hands what to do. The head tells the mouth what to say, the feet where to go, and so on!

Today, the local church, where the believers meet is His Church. We are gathered by His Holy Spirit to form one body. We are His hands, we are His feet, we are His mouth, and we are His ears. And more importantly we have the responsibility to express to the world around us, His love, His grace, His mercy, His patience, His peace and His acceptance.

Jesus wants us, as His body, to share with the rest of the world how we can have a relationship with God by faith alone in His Son and the blood of His cross. When the local church of genuine believers allows Jesus to be the head of the church, it becomes the most wonderful place on the planet! It literally can be a taste of heaven here below.

Too often, the pastors, the deacons, the elders, or a group of members think they are in charge of the church and have a right to determine what it should do and how the money should be spent. And instead of unity and peace, you have a place of jealousy, strife and contention. How sad!

Today, please join me in recognizing Jesus as the Head of His Church!

God bless!
