"My God Shall Supply All Your Need"

Philippians 4:19

Welcome to Pastor’s Chat. Before we continue our study in Philippians, I first want to express my heartfelt thanks to each of you who prayed for our mission team during our trip to Guatemala this past week. I can honestly say that your prayers were answered in wonderful ways. The trip could not have gone better. We had an outstanding team that worked together in unity and with joyful hearts. Every transportation detail, every lodging arrangement, and every ministry schedule came together beautifully. God truly went before us.

The Lord enabled us to complete every mission objective. We were able to visit homes, minister in public schools, participate in church services, encourage pastors and church leaders, and meet many precious people along the way. Most importantly, the name of Jesus Christ was lifted up, the Gospel was shared, people were saved, and God alone received the glory.

Our national ministry partners were absolutely tremendous. Their servant spirit, faithful labor, and loving assistance blessed us every day. They repeatedly told us that they, too, had been encouraged by our coming. What a joy it is to experience the fellowship of believers serving together across cultures for the cause of Christ. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for praying. You had a real part in everything God accomplished. I hope to share more about the trip in the days ahead.

Now let's return to our study in Philippians chapter 4. Last week, before we left, we looked at verse 18 where Paul wrote, "But I have all, and abound: I am full..." The generous gift from the Philippian believers had met his present needs. Paul described their offering as "an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God." Their gift was not merely money given to a missionary. It was an act of worship offered to God Himself.

That brings us to one of the most familiar promises in all of Scripture. Verse 19 says, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." This verse has been quoted thousands of times, but sadly it is often quoted apart from its context. Notice first that this promise begins with two wonderful words: "My God." Paul is not speaking merely about God in a general sense. He is speaking about the God whom he knew personally, trusted completely, and had depended upon throughout every circumstance of life. This was the God who had met Paul's needs in prison, on missionary journeys, through persecution, hunger, shipwrecks, and countless hardships.

Paul could confidently say, "My God shall supply." Notice also that Paul does not simply say God can supply our needs. He says God shall supply. This is a promise based on God's faithfulness, not our circumstances. But we must remember who this promise was originally given to. Paul is speaking to believers who had sacrificially given to support the work of God. They had invested in the Gospel. They had shared in Paul's ministry. They had met his needs when few others had done so. In a sense, Paul is saying, "You have taken care of God's servant. Now God will take care of you."

That same principle is found throughout Scripture. Jesus said in Luke 6:38, "Give, and it shall be given unto you." And in 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9, Paul teaches that God blesses generous believers so they may continue to abound in every good work. Notice something else. Paul does not promise that God will supply all our greeds. He promises to supply all our needs. Our heavenly Father knows the difference. Sometimes what we think we need is really only something we desire. But God, in His infinite wisdom, always knows exactly what is best for His children. He never fails to provide what is necessary to accomplish His will in our lives.

Then Paul tells us the measure of God's provision: "According to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." He does not give out of His riches, as though handing us a small portion. He gives according to His riches. The resources of heaven are unlimited because our God is unlimited. Every blessing we receive ultimately comes through one source—Jesus Christ. Every spiritual blessing, every answered prayer, every provision of grace, every daily need is supplied through our Savior.

As I reflect on our mission trip this past week, I am reminded again that God truly does supply every need. He supplied the people. He supplied the strength. He supplied the protection. He supplied the opportunities. He supplied the resources. Once again, He proved Himself faithful. And dear friend, He is just as faithful today in your life. If you belong to Him, you can trust Him. Walk with Him. Serve Him. Be generous toward His work. Then leave your needs in His capable hands.

Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing faithfulness. Thank You for answering so many prayers during our mission trip and allowing us to see Your hand at work. Thank You for every person who prayed and supported this ministry. Now help us to trust You more completely. Teach us to be generous, faithful, and willing to invest our lives in Your kingdom. And as we do, remind us that You are the God who supplies every need according to Your riches in glory through Christ Jesus. We ask these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
