Grace for the Journey

Philippians 4:23

Welcome to Pastor's Chat. Today we come to the final verse in our wonderful journey through the book of Philippians. For many weeks we have walked together, verse by verse, through this precious letter. We have laughed with Paul, wept with Paul, learned from Paul, and most of all, we have been pointed again and again to the Lord Jesus Christ. It seems fitting that Paul closes this letter exactly where the Christian life begins—with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.  In verse 23, the last verse of this book, Paul writes, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen." At first glance, this may seem like a simple farewell. But it is much more than that. It is Paul's final prayer, his final blessing, and his final reminder that everything in the Christian life depends upon the grace of God.

Paul also begins this letter with grace and ends it with grace. In Philippians 1:2 he writes, "Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ." Now in the last verse he writes, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen." Grace is the bookends of this letter. Grace brought us into the family of God. Grace sustains us every day. And grace will carry us safely Home. We never outgrow our need for God's grace. Sometimes people think that grace is only for salvation. They say, "I was saved by grace, but now I must live the Christian life on my own." Nothing could be farther from the truth. The same grace that saves us also strengthens us, teaches us, forgives us, restores us, and keeps us until the day we see Christ face to face.

Paul understood this. He wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:10, "But by the grace of God I am what I am." He did not say, "I used to need grace." He said, "Everything I am today is because of God's grace." When the thorn in the flesh was not removed, the Lord said to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Notice that Jesus did not promise to remove every burden. He promised sufficient grace. Grace for every trial. Grace for every disappointment. Grace for every temptation. Grace for every sorrow. Grace for every opportunity to serve Him. That is why I have entitled today's chat, “Grace for the Journey."

As we have traveled through Philippians, we have discovered that the Christian life is a journey. In chapter one we learned to have a single mind, living for Christ and the Gospel. In chapter two we learned to have a submissive mind, following the example of our humble Savior. In chapter three we learned to have a spiritual mind, pressing toward the prize and refusing to trust in the flesh. And in chapter four we learned to have a secure mind—rejoicing in the Lord, praying instead of worrying, thinking on the right things, being content in every circumstance, and trusting God to supply every need. How do we live that kind of life? Only by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

You may remember what we have said several times throughout this study: the Christian life is not difficult—it is impossible apart from Christ. We cannot rejoice in every circumstance by our own strength. We cannot love our enemies by our own strength. We cannot have peace that passes understanding by our own strength. We cannot overcome anxious thoughts by our own strength. We cannot be content in every situation by our own strength. But what we cannot do, His grace enables us to do. His grace is not merely God's favor toward us. It is God's power working in us. It is Christ living His life through us. Perhaps that is why Paul specifically says, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

Grace is not an abstract idea. Grace is found in a Person. Everything we need is found in Jesus. John tells us in John 1:16, "And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace." Every day we draw upon His fullness. As yesterday's grace is spent, today's grace is supplied. Tomorrow's grace will be there when tomorrow arrives. God never asks us to live today on yesterday's grace, nor does He expect us to borrow tomorrow's grace. He gives us exactly what we need for each day. I have often thought about Paul's own life.

He had been beaten. He had been imprisoned. He had been shipwrecked. He had suffered hunger, loneliness, rejection, and persecution. Yet when he comes to the end of this letter, he does not complain. He does not express regret. He simply points everyone back to the grace of Jesus Christ. That tells me that grace is enough. It was enough for Paul. It is enough for us.

As we conclude our study of Philippians, I hope you will remember the great lessons God has taught us. Remember to keep your eyes on Christ. Remember that joy is found in Him, not in your circumstances. Remember that peace comes through prayer. Remember that your thoughts shape your life. Remember that contentment is learned. Remember that giving is an act of grace. Remember that God will supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. And above all, remember that every step of the Christian journey is sustained by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. One day our journey will be over. Faith will become sight. Prayer will give way to praise. Hope will be fulfilled. And we will stand in the presence of the One whose grace carried us all the way Home. Until that day, may His grace be with each one of us.

My prayer is that these studies have encouraged your heart, strengthened your faith, and drawn you into a closer walk with our wonderful Savior. As Paul would surely remind us, let us continue pressing toward the mark, rejoicing in the Lord, and living each day in the sufficiency of His marvelous grace.

Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we praise You for the amazing grace that reached down to save us through the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You that Your grace has not only forgiven our sins but has faithfully sustained us every step of life's journey. Thank You for walking with us through every joy and every sorrow, every victory and every trial. As we conclude our study of Philippians, may the truths we have learned become realities that shape the way we live each day. Teach us to rejoice in You, to trust You in every circumstance, to pray without ceasing, to guard our minds with Your truth, and to rest in Your faithful provision. Above all, help us to depend completely upon the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ until the day we see Him face to face. May our lives bring glory to You, and may others see Christ living in us. We offer ourselves to You anew with grateful hearts and joyful praise. In the precious and wonderful name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we pray. Amen..
