1 Thessalonians 1:8

Sounding Out the Word

Welcome to Pastor’s Chat. Today we continue our journey through 1 Thessalonians chapter 1, and we come to verse 8. Paul writes: “For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak anything.” I love that expression: “From you sounded out the word of the Lord.” Remember what Paul has already told us about these believers. In verse 3, he spoke of their work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope. In verse 6, they became followers of Paul and of the Lord. In verse 7, they became examples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

Now in verse 8, we discover that they also became witnesses. They received the Word, they lived the Word, and now they were sharing the Word. The phrase “sounded out” is a very interesting expression. It carries the idea of something ringing out or echoing forth. It was used of the sound of a trumpet or a loud voice that could be heard at a distance. In other words, the Gospel did not stop when it reached Thessalonica. It echoed out from Thessalonica. That is exactly what should happen in our lives and in our churches today. The Gospel comes to us so that it can go through us to someone else.

Think about what happened in Thessalonica. Paul had not been there very long. According to Acts 17, tremendous opposition arose against him and his companions. Paul eventually had to leave the city. You might have thought that once Paul left, the Gospel witness would become silent. But it didn’t! Paul left Thessalonica, but the Word of God stayed there. And those new believers began sounding it out everywhere they went. Paul says it sounded out “not only in Macedonia and Achaia.” As we said yesterday, Macedonia was the northern region of Greece where Thessalonica was located. Achaia was the southern region where cities such as Athens and Corinth were located. But Paul goes even further. He says, “but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad.” Their testimony had traveled far beyond their own city. People were talking about what God had done in Thessalonica!

That reminds us that a genuine work of God cannot easily be hidden. When Jesus Christ truly changes a life, somebody is going to notice. And when a church is filled with believers whose lives have been transformed by the Gospel, its influence should extend far beyond the walls of its building. My friend, the church was never intended to be simply a place where we come together once or twice a week to hear the Word of God. We gather to hear the Word, but then we scatter to sound out the Word. We take it into our homes. We take it into our neighborhoods. We take it into our workplaces. We take it into our communities. And wherever God gives us an opportunity, we share the wonderful message that Jesus Christ saves.

Notice something else. Paul does not simply say that their words were spreading. He says, “your faith to God-ward is spread abroad.” Their message was supported by their lives. People were not only hearing what these Christians said; they were seeing what these Christians believed by the way they lived. That is one of the greatest challenges for us today. Our lives should give credibility to our message. If we tell people that Jesus changes lives, there should be evidence that Jesus has changed our life. If we tell people that Jesus gives peace, they should see His peace in us. If we tell people that Jesus teaches us to love, they should experience His love through us. If we tell people that Jesus gives hope, they should see hope in the way we face the difficulties of life. Remember what Paul said back in verse 3: their work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope were visible. Now their testimony was sounding out everywhere.

And then Paul makes an amazing statement at the end of verse 8: “So that we need not to speak anything.” Paul was basically saying, “When we arrive somewhere and begin telling people about what happened in Thessalonica, they already know!” Can you imagine having that kind of testimony? Paul didn't need to advertise the church at Thessalonica. Their transformed lives were advertising the power of the Gospel. That causes me to ask myself a question today: What kind of sound is coming from my life? All of us are sounding out something. Our attitudes sound out something. Our words sound out something. Our reactions to difficulties sound out something. The way we treat people sounds out something. Our priorities sound out something. The question is: Are we sounding out the Word of the Lord?

Over the years, I have often reminded people that you don't have to be a preacher or missionary to be a witness for Jesus Christ. You simply need to be willing to tell someone what Jesus has done for you. And today we have opportunities that the Thessalonians could never have imagined. Through a telephone, a text message, an email, a social media post, a conversation with a neighbor, or a simple word of encouragement, the Word of the Lord can sound out from our lives to people near and far. But never forget—the most powerful witness is still a transformed life connected with the truth of God's Word. That is what happened in Thessalonica. They received the Word. They lived the Word. And they sounded out the Word. My friend, somebody shared the Gospel with us. Somebody prayed for us. Somebody taught us the Scriptures. Somebody pointed us to Jesus. Now it is our turn. May the Word of the Lord continue to sound out through our lives until everyone around us has had an opportunity to hear the wonderful message of Jesus Christ.

Let’s pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious Word of God and for those who faithfully shared it with us. Thank You most of all for the Gospel of Jesus Christ that has the power to change our hearts and lives. Lord, help us not simply to hear Your Word, but to live it and to sound it out to others. Give us opportunities today to share Your love, Your grace, and the wonderful message of salvation. May our words, our attitudes, and our actions give evidence that Jesus Christ lives within us. Help our homes and our churches to be places from which the Word of the Lord continually sounds out into our communities and around the world. And Lord, put someone in our path today who needs to hear about Jesus, and give us the courage and wisdom to share Him with them. We ask these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
