Romans 8:1-4
Probably one of the most quoted Old Testament passages is from Isaiah 40:31 “But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”
The practical application of this great promise if found here in Romans 8:1-4. As followers of Jesus Christ, despite any situation or circumstance we might find ourselves in, we could still be enjoying the freedom of living above them and not being dragged down to miserable living! But to do that, we must understand that there are two laws that always are operating at the same time. The “law of sin and death” and the “law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.”
The best way to understand this, is with the two physical laws of gravity and aerodynamics. When we see a plane or a bird flying across the sky, has the law of gravity disappeared and no longer in existence? Of course not! It’s still there as strong and powerful as it ever was, but the plane and bird are now operating under the principles of a new law – the law of aerodynamics. And as long as they abide and obey those principles, they will appear to be defying the law of gravity. But the moment they neglect just one aspect of the new law, the law of gravity will take over and pull them back to the earth.
The “law of sin and death” is always present with me drawing back to the world and sinful living. But by God’s grace, I can now begin to operate under a new set of principles, called the “Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus”. And when I do, I can enjoy the freedom of living above the “law of sin and death.”
With the Lord’s help, it is my prayer that we will learn from this passage to begin to “mount up on wings like eagles” and soar above the clamor and filth of this old world!
God bless!
