Our Weapon Against False Teaching
Ephesians 6:17
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Today we are continuing to talk about the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. We have discussed the many things the sword of the Spirit will do for us as a weapon. It is also something God uses to bring healing into our lives. Today, we are focusing on how the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—is our greatest defense against the false teaching of the cults and heresies that are so prevalent in the world today. This is very important. At the same time it is our best weapon against the false teaching that Paul warned would take place in the last days (1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 3:1-9).
The best answer to secular humanism is the Word of God. If there was ever a day when secular humanism has infiltrated even Christianity, it is today. Sadly, we are witnessing what A.W. Tozer called a humanistic Christianity. How true that is. It becomes all about me—what I feel, what I can have, what is in it for me—instead of asking, What do we learn about God? How can we be holy like God?
The Apostle Paul warned even the young church at Ephesus. You must understand that false teaching has been present since the very beginning of the early church. It was already creeping in. Peter dealt with it. The Apostle John dealt with it. We find Paul addressing it as well when he spoke to the elders of the church at Ephesus In Acts 20:29-32. He said: “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also, from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears. So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” How true that is. God’s Word, Paul said, is what will build you up, sanctify you, set you apart, and give you courage and wisdom to deal with the false teachers.
Today, people are not asking, “What does God say?” Instead, they are asking, “What do I feel?” We hear phrases like, “Follow your heart.” “What does your heart tell you?” “What do you think the Bible is saying to you?” But that is not the most important thing. The most important question is: “What is God saying”? Period. God has spoken. Whether you believe it or not, His Word is settled. Yet today people ask, “What do I prefer? What do I think is true?” Paul warned that in the last days people would have itching ears—they want their ears scratched and tickled (2 Timothy 4:3-5). They want to hear things that are not true but make them feel good.
Peter wrote in 1 Peter 3:15, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” John also warned in 2 John 7–8: “For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.” Oh my friend, we have the cults today that deny the deity of Jesus Christ. They've invaded even our churches. Today there are many, so called Christian churches with pastors that deny that Jesus was born of a virgin. That teach that the Bible is not the inspired Word of God.
Their religion is a do-good religion. Do the best you can and you'll get to heaven. Try to keep the Ten Commandments. Then there's good God, good devil, good everybody. All you have to do is do what you feel like is the best thing for you to do. In the end, God will have mercy on you and we're all going to get to heaven one day. I've actually heard these pastors quote Romans 8:35-39 at funerals telling the people that “nothing can separate us from the love of God that's in Christ Jesus our Lord. Everybody's going to end up in heaven one day because nothing can separate us from His love”.
My friend, these are lies of the devil. That's why Jude also warned in Jude verse 3, "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ."
My friend, we must know the Word of God! It is our best weapon against the false teachers and their heresy. Jesus said, "Sanctify them through thy truth. Thy word is truth" (John 17:17).
God bless you, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day.
