Wonderful Words of Life

1 John 1:1-2 “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—“

When I was growing up going to our “old fashion” church services, singing the old “traditional” hymns, one of the songs we would sing was entitled, “Wonderful Words of Life.” A phrase in the song was, “Sing them over and over again to me…” Today, as we continue to look at the Epistle of First John, we want to share with you some words that get repeated over and over again.

The key to studying and getting a better understanding of any passage or book in the Bible is to look for words that are repeated. Years ago, under the last chapter of First John in my Bible, I wrote the words that I noticed were used over and over again.

The word that is used the most seems to be the word, “know”. We have already said that John stated the reason for writing this book was that “we might know that we have eternal life.” To “know” is to be assured, to have the full assurance of a truth and a reality. The next word is “believe”. This word is more than just an intellectual assent to a truth, but is a deep inward faith and conviction about that truth. This is crucial in “overcoming the world.” (1 John 5:5)

The other words I noted that are repeated are: (not in any specific order) love, truth or true, children, commandments, Spirit, Son of God, testimony or witness, life or eternal life.

Please take the time to read this wonderful book in a single sitting. It will only take you about 15 minutes. About the time it would take to drink a cup of hot coffee in the morning. Underline or circle these words and I believe this book will come alive to you.

Jesus said in John 6:63, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” Jesus still speaks today and makes His words come alive to us if we will take the time!

God bless!
