“As You Have Been Taught” Colossians 2:5-7
“For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
Do you know why most people believe what they believe? They were taught to believe it. I woke up this morning early literally thinking about the creation of the universe. I thought about how the earth was exactly the right size. How it was exactly the right distance from the sun. How the sun was exactly the right size. How the earth precisely orbits the sun at exactly the right speed. How the earth spins on its axis at exactly the right speed. How the moon orbits the earth. How seven other planets are also orbiting the sun and are in exactly the right position with their moons traveling at exactly the right speed. And how it all holds together by a mysterious force by something we call gravity but really can’t explain.
I believe that there is a designer behind this marvelous design. That there is a creator behind the creation and that His name is God! I believe in the very first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” And no doubt, I believe this because I was taught to believe this from a child. But over the years, I’ve also confirmed what I believe because of the obvious evidence to support this belief!
But there are countless millions of people who believe in the empty theory of evolution that tries to explain how the universe and human beings came into existence by a big bang some billions of years in the past. They have chosen to believe this theory because someone they thought was educated and intelligent taught them to believe it. I’ve always thought that it would take more faith to believe that than to simply believe Genesis 1:1.
What do you believe about Jesus Christ? What do you believe about the Bible? Generally you will believe what someone else taught you! Paul was commending the faith and growth of the saints of Colossae because they had teachers who had taught them these truths and they had accepted and believed them!
My friend, it is vitally important that you make sure you are listening to teachers who are leading you to a closer, more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and that exalts Him. I love how Paul added the phrase, “As you have been taught.” And to be taught correctly, we need teachers that can teach correctly and truthfully. Anything other than that, is deceitful, empty and is a lie to cause you not to know the true and living Creator God who loves you, and revealed Himself to you through His Son Jesus Christ!
Who is teaching you today? Be aware, there are multitudes of false teachers!
God bless!
God is good. I love how after every major event in God’s creation, He proclaimed, “And it was good.” Thank you, Mike, for teaching and proclaiming the Truth of God’s Word!
