“One Sat on the Throne” Revelation 4:1-3 “After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this." Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.”
Before God pours out His wrath on earth, He gives us a glimpse into glory and permits us to hear the worshiping creatures in heaven as they praise God. In Revelation chapters 4 and 5 two aspects of their worship are presented. In Revelation 4, we find the host of heaven worshiping God as Creator. In Revelation 5, we see the multitudes worshiping the Lamb as Redeemer!
If there was ever a time that we needed to be reminded of Who is really in charge of the affairs of the earth, it is today! I love how this section of Revelation begins with the words, “After these things…”. What things? After John finished writing the seven letters to the seven churches he looks up! Up to this point he had a horizontal look, so to speak, looking across the ages at the characteristics and condition of the church. Now John takes a vertical look! He looks up to heaven and sees a door standing open!
Remember the last letter to the church of Laodicea? Jesus is pictured standing and knocking on the door of the church and is seeking for someone to open the door. The doors of our churches and our hearts might be shut! We have shut out the Lord and His presence. But now in the very next chapter, we are told that His door is open to us in heaven! What a great thought! If we would only open our heart’s door in repentance and by faith look up, we would get a heavenly look and see His open door!
Not only that, John hears a voice that is speaking to him! Today, do you need to hear the voice of the Lord speaking to you from heaven? Maybe it is time for us to “be still and know that He is God”. If we want to hear His voice we are going to have to tune in to His frequency! We need to tune out the world with all the noises it is making around us, and by repentance and faith look up! Like Jesus told the disciples when He was teaching them to pray in Matthew 6, we need to enter the closet and shut the door of all the distractions it has around us! And then, I believe we will begin to also hear His voice speaking to us.
It was only after Isaiah saw in Isaiah 6, the glorious worship scene in heaven, and he confess his sins and was cleansed, that he then heard the voice of God asking, “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?” My friend, it is time for us to have the “upward look”. Today, with all the clamor and the noise of the evil, and the violence going on all around us that can cause so much fear and insecurity, we need to stop and look up!
John first heard a voice saying, “Come up here”. But then he was invited to see the future and the first thing he saw was “A throne set in heaven”. But next and most importantly he saw, “One sat on the throne.” How awesome is this! The throne speaks of the position of authority that God has over the affairs of the earth! We are reminded that our God is sovereign and He is in charge! It might be interesting to note that the word “throne” is used 14 times in this chapter alone, and some 45 times in the Book of Revelation!
Today, it is my prayer that we will open up the doors of our hearts in faith and repentance! That we then will hear His voice speaking to us personally, and we will let the Lord have His rightful place on the throne of our life as we yield to Him in surrender and obedience.
God bless!
