Romans 12:3-5 – Our Relationship With Others
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
After Paul establishes the priority of our relationship with God, he then moves to our relationship with others around us. His focus in these next few verses is to help us find our place in the body of Jesus Christ, which is His church.
Over the years, I have taught that it is impossible to find real fulfilment in life if you do not know your Spiritual gifts and you are exercising those gifts in the Body of Christ, the Church! Do you know your Spiritual gift? Are you using that gift to edify and build up the church?
Paul often used the human body to illustrate the Church, the Body of Jesus Christ. Just as our body has ears to hear with, eyes to see with, a mouth to speak with, legs and feet to walk with, arms and hands to work with, we have been put in the Body of Christ as a specific member to make sure it can fulfil God’s purpose for it in this world.
And even though the body has many members, it is one body, and all the members work together in unity and harmony to give us the opportunity and pleasure of enjoying life and fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives in this world.
This is the purpose of these verses. The church is one body and everyone of us has a specific place as a member to benefit the whole body!
If you do not know your place of ministry in the church, please pray and ask the Lord to open your spiritual eyes to find it and then be obedient to use exercise your gift!
God bless!
