2 Thessalonians 2:15-17

“Stand Fast”

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.”

Welcome to Pastor’s Chat. Today we come to the final three verses of 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. And after everything Paul has taught about the future, he gives these believers a very simple command: “Therefore, brethren, stand fast.” I love that. Paul doesn't tell them to panic. He doesn't tell them to hide. He doesn't tell them to spend all their time trying to figure out every detail of prophecy. He says: “Stand fast.”

In other words: Stay where God has placed you. Hold your ground. Don't be moved away from the truth. Remember, these Christians were being persecuted. False teaching had confused them. Somebody had convinced them that the Day of the Lord had already come. Their minds had been shaken. So Paul has carefully corrected their misunderstanding. And now he says: “Stand fast.”

That's still a good word for Christians today. We live in a rapidly changing world. Things that were commonly understood to be right or wrong just a generation ago are being questioned today. Culture changes. Popular opinion changes. Governments change. Technology changes. Our personal circumstances change. But God's truth does not change. Isaiah said: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” So Paul tells them to hold on to the truth they had been taught. For us today, that means holding tightly to the Word of God.

And notice something important. Standing fast doesn't mean standing still spiritually. We should always be growing. We should be learning. We should become more like Jesus. But there are some truths we never outgrow. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He died for our sins. He rose bodily from the grave. Salvation is by grace through faith. The Bible is God's Word. Jesus is coming again. Those aren't truths we move beyond. Those are truths upon which we stand.

Then Paul gives one of the most beautiful benedictions in his letters. He speaks of our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father, Who has “loved us” and given us “everlasting consolation and good hope by grace.” What a wonderful combination: Everlasting consolation. Good hope. Grace. Our comfort isn't temporary. Our hope isn't wishful thinking. And our salvation isn't something we've earned. It's all because of grace.

Then Paul prays that God would: “comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.” Notice that Paul doesn't simply want them to know prophecy. He wants prophecy to change how they live. He wants them established in every good word and every good work. That's a wonderful way to finish this chapter. We began chapter 2 with believers who were shaken. We end chapter 2 with Paul telling those same believers to be established. What makes the difference? Truth. When you know what God has said, you don't have to be tossed around by every rumor, prediction, or frightening headline. You can stand fast. And maybe that's God's word for somebody today.

Stand fast. You've been praying for someone for years. Stand fast. You've experienced disappointment. Stand fast. You're walking through grief. Stand fast. Your body isn't as strong as it once was. Stand fast. You don't know what tomorrow holds. Stand fast. Why? Because you know Who holds tomorrow. After more than fifty years in ministry, I've seen many things change. I've watched styles change. I've watched churches change. I've watched society change. I've watched technology change in ways we could never have imagined when I began preaching. But the Gospel I preached more than fifty years ago is the same Gospel I believe today. Jesus still saves. The Bible is still true. God is still faithful. And Jesus is still coming again.

So until He comes: Stand fast. Keep believing. Keep praying. Keep serving. Keep loving people. Keep sharing Jesus. And keep your eyes looking toward heaven.

Let's pray. Father, thank You for Your unchanging Word. In a world where so many things are changing, help us to stand fast in the truth You have given us. Comfort our hearts, strengthen us by Your grace, and establish us in every good word and work. Help us remain faithful to Jesus until the day we see Him face to face. In His precious name we pray, Amen.

God bless, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!
