Truth for Troubled Times

An Introduction to 1 & 2 Timothy — Part 2

Welcome to Pastor’s Chat. Yesterday we began introducing our new journey through 1 and 2 Timothy. We talked about the special relationship between Paul and Timothy and the importance of passing our faith to the next generation. Today I want us to think about why these letters are so important for the times in which we live.

Paul and Timothy were living in a world that was anything but friendly to Christianity. Before we go any further, it might help us to understand where Paul was when he wrote these two letters. When Paul wrote 1 Timothy, he was free and traveling, probably writing from Macedonia, while Timothy was ministering in Ephesus. But by the time Paul wrote 2 Timothy, everything had changed. Paul was imprisoned in Rome for the second time, facing execution, and he wrote what appears to be his final inspired letter.

So as we study these two books together, we are going to hear the heart of an older apostle instructing and encouraging a younger servant of God—and eventually, in 2 Timothy, we will hear Paul essentially passing the torch to Timothy as he realizes that his own earthly ministry is coming to an end. The Roman world was filled with idolatry, immorality, violence, political corruption, and opposition to the Gospel. And even within the church there was the danger of false teaching. That's one reason Paul repeatedly told Timothy to remain faithful to the truth.

But Paul also looked beyond his own generation. In 2 Timothy 3:1, he wrote: “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.” Then Paul describes those days. He says people will be: “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents…” And the list continues. Later, in verse 13, Paul says: “But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” When you read those words, you realize that the Bible is not an outdated book. It speaks directly to the world in which we live. We look around America and around our world today and see many of the very characteristics Paul described.

But here's what is important. Paul didn't tell Timothy to panic. He didn't tell him to give up. He didn't tell him to hide from the culture. Instead, he told Timothy to remain faithful. In 2 Timothy 3:14 Paul says: “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of.” I love those words: “But you must continue.” The world may change. Culture may change. People's opinions may change. But God's Word does not change. And our responsibility remains the same. “Continue.” Continue believing the Word. Continue preaching the Word. Continue living the Word. Continue sharing the Gospel. Continue standing for what is right. Continue loving people. Continue following Jesus.

That's one of the reasons I believe our study of 1 and 2 Timothy is so timely. These letters tell us how Christians should live when the culture around them is moving farther away from God. And they remind us that our confidence is not in government, politics, economics, education, or human wisdom. Our confidence is in Jesus Christ and the unchanging Word of God.

When I was a young pastor, I memorized these books because I needed their instructions for ministry. Now, many years later, I find that I need their message just as much. Perhaps even more. Because no matter how long we have known the Lord, we never outgrow our need for God's Word. And no matter how dark the world becomes, God's truth still shines. Jesus said in Matthew 24:35: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”

So, as we begin this journey through 1 Timothy tomorrow, I want to encourage you to join me with an open Bible and an open heart. We are not merely studying an ancient letter from Paul to a young preacher. We are listening to the inspired Word of God speaking to us today. The times may be difficult. The culture may be changing. Evil may increase. But our calling has not changed. Be faithful. Stand firm. Continue in the truth. And keep looking to Jesus.

Let's pray. Father, thank You that in a changing and troubled world, Your Word never changes. Thank You that You have given us everything we need to know how to live faithfully for You. Lord, we see many things happening around us that concern us, but help us not to live in fear. Help us instead to continue in the things we have learned from Your Word. Give us courage to stand for truth, grace to love people, wisdom to recognize error, and faithfulness to keep serving You until Jesus comes. Speak to our hearts as we study these wonderful letters together. In Jesus' precious name we pray, Amen.

God bless, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!
