“Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners”

1 Timothy 1:15–17

Welcome to Pastor's Chat! Today, we've come to what I believe is one of the most wonderful declarations in all of Paul's writings. In fact, if someone were to ask me to explain the purpose of Jesus Christ coming into this world, I could hardly find a better verse than the one we're studying today. Listen to 1 Timothy 1:15: "This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief." What a tremendous statement!

Paul begins by saying this is a faithful saying, worthy of everyone's acceptance. In other words, this is a truth that everyone needs to hear, understand, and believe. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners! Now, think about that for a moment. Jesus didn't come simply to be a great teacher, although He was the greatest Teacher who ever lived. He didn't come merely to provide us with a good example, although His life was absolutely perfect.

And He didn't come simply to establish another religious movement. Jesus came into this world for one supreme purpose: to save sinners! That's why He left the glory of heaven and took upon Himself human flesh. That's why He lived a sinless life. And that's why He willingly went to the cross of Calvary and gave His life for our sins. Jesus Himself declared in Luke 19:10 that the Son of Man came to seek and save those who were lost. And my friend, that's the greatest news this world has ever heard!

Now, notice something else in verse 15. Paul says that among sinners, he was the chief. Isn't that remarkable? Here's a man who had preached the gospel throughout the Roman world, established churches, and written much of our New Testament. Yet he never lost sight of the fact that he was a sinner saved by grace. And I believe there's a wonderful lesson here. The closer we walk with the Lord, the more we recognize how much we need His grace. You know, after all these years in ministry, I can tell you that the Christian life never becomes a matter of outgrowing our need for God's mercy. Every day, we need His forgiveness, His strength, and His guidance.

Now, look at verse 16. Paul explains that he received mercy so that Jesus Christ might demonstrate His longsuffering through him, as an example to those who would later believe on Him for everlasting life. What a beautiful thought! Paul's testimony became a living illustration of the patience and mercy of Jesus Christ. It's as though Paul were saying, "If God could save someone like me, then no one should ever think they're beyond His reach." And perhaps that's exactly what someone needs to hear today. Maybe you have a family member or a friend you've been praying for over many years. And perhaps you've wondered whether that person will ever come to know the Lord. Don't stop praying! Remember Saul of Tarsus. If God could transform that persecutor into the Apostle Paul, He can still reach hearts that seem impossible to change.

Now, I love how Paul concludes this section in verse 17. After reflecting upon God's wonderful mercy, Paul simply breaks forth in praise. He gives honor and glory to the eternal, immortal, invisible God, who alone is wise. And he ends with one word: Amen! It's almost as though Paul couldn't contain himself. When he thought about what Jesus Christ had done for him, his heart overflowed with worship. And shouldn't that be true of us? When was the last time you simply stopped and thanked the Lord for saving your soul? Not because of something you had accomplished, or because you deserved His favor, but simply because of His wonderful love and grace.

Let me leave you with this thought. The greatest miracle you'll ever experience is the miracle of salvation through Jesus Christ. And if you've never trusted Him as your Savior, today would be a wonderful day to do so. Because Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And that includes you!

Let's pray together. Our gracious Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful truth that Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners. Lord, we are so grateful that You loved us enough to send Your only begotten Son to die upon the cross for our sins. Thank You for Your mercy, Your patience, and Your amazing grace. Father, I pray especially for anyone listening today who has never personally trusted Jesus Christ as Savior. May Your Holy Spirit help them recognize their need and turn to Christ in repentance and faith. And Lord, for those of us who have known You for many years, help us never to lose the wonder of our salvation. May our hearts continually overflow with praise and thanksgiving. To You, our eternal, immortal, invisible, and only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. In the wonderful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

God bless, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!
