Showers of Blessings
Psalm 103:1-5
A Psalm of David.
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,
4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
In Psalm 103 David is remembering all Jehovah’s personal benefits that he has experienced and enjoyed over his lifetime. This is a psalm of worship and praise that we should often read, memorize, and quote back to the LORD as we recognized His great goodness and all the blessings He has showered down upon us. I’ll never forget as a child growing up in church singing a very lively and joyful hymn called Showers of Blessings! Today, I trust you will also listen to the video of our Pastor’s Chat, but I felt impressed to share this blessed hymn in its entirety in my blog:
There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need;
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
There shall be showers of blessing;
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.
There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord!
Grant to us now a refreshing;
Come, and now honor Thy Word.
There shall be showers of blessing;
O that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!
There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.
In verses 3-6, David listed at least seven special blessings from the hand of the Lord (vv. 3-5): forgiveness, healing, redemption, love, mercy, satisfaction, and renewal. The word translated "forgives" is used in Scripture only of God's forgiveness of sinners (see vv. 10-12). The word for "iniquity" pictures sin as something twisted and distorted. This is only for those who have trusted Christ and have experienced God's forgiveness (Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14 and 2:13).
We can only experience God’s blessing of forgiveness, not simply because He loves us, but because He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross and take our punishment of death in our place. When we repent of our sins and by faith receive Jesus as our Savior, we are immediately forgiven for all our sins!
Forgiven!!!!!! What a blessed word, and an awesome blessing, we can receive as a “benefit” from God today!!!!!
God bless!
