“The Church of the Living God”

1 Timothy 3:14–16

Welcome to Pastor's Chat! Today, we're continuing our study through Paul's first letter to Timothy, and we've come to the final three verses of chapter 3. Over the past several days, we've been considering Paul's instructions concerning the qualifications of pastors and deacons. And now, as Paul concludes this chapter, he reminds Timothy of something extremely important. The church belongs to the living God!

Listen to what Paul writes in 1 Timothy 3:14–15: "These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." Now, I want you to notice several wonderful truths in these verses.

First, the church is the household of God. Paul describes the church as the house of God. And he's not talking about a physical building made of bricks and mortar. He's talking about the family of believers who have been brought together through faith in Jesus Christ. You see, the church isn't simply an organization that people join. It's a spiritual family into which we're brought through the new birth. And what a wonderful privilege it is to belong to the family of God! You know, after more than fifty years of pastoral ministry, I can tell you that some of the sweetest relationships I've enjoyed have been with the people of God. I've had the privilege of pastoring several wonderful congregations, and even today, many of those dear people remain precious friends. And although we're sometimes separated by hundreds of miles, we still share that wonderful bond of fellowship in Jesus Christ. That's what makes the church so special. We're not simply members of an organization. We're brothers and sisters in the family of God!

Second, the church belongs to the living God. Notice that expression in verse 15. Paul calls it "the church of the living God." Now, remember that Timothy was ministering in Ephesus, a city famous for its magnificent temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, also known as Diana. People traveled from great distances to worship at that temple. But Paul reminds Timothy that the Christian church worships the living God! Not an idol made by human hands. Not a false god who cannot hear or answer prayer. But the eternal, all-powerful, living God who created heaven and earth! And my friend, that's the God we worship today. He hears our prayers. He knows our needs. And He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us.

Third, the church is the pillar and ground of the truth. Now, that's a powerful statement! Paul describes the church as "the pillar and ground of the truth." In other words, the church has been entrusted with the responsibility of upholding and proclaiming the truth of God's Word. The church doesn't invent the truth. And it certainly doesn't have the authority to change the truth. Rather, our responsibility is to faithfully preserve, teach, and proclaim the truth God has already revealed in His Word. And I believe that's especially important in the world in which we're living today. We live in a time when many people want to redefine truth according to their own personal opinions. But God's Word remains the same. And the church must never compromise the truth simply to gain the approval of the world.

Now, listen to what Paul says in verse 16. He begins with these words: "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness..." And then Paul gives us a remarkable declaration concerning Jesus Christ. He speaks of God being manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up in glory. What a wonderful summary of the person and work of our Savior! Now, Bible scholars have noted that this verse may have been an early Christian confession of faith or even a hymn sung by believers in the first century. And isn't that interesting? The early church was already declaring these wonderful truths about Jesus Christ! He came into this world in human flesh. His righteousness and identity were vindicated through the work of the Spirit, especially in His resurrection. He was proclaimed among the nations. People believed upon Him. And He was received up into glory!

Now, there's something else I want you to notice. At the very heart of the church's message is the person of Jesus Christ. The church isn't primarily about buildings, programs, budgets, or even personalities. It's about Jesus! His incarnation. His sinless life. His sacrificial death. His glorious resurrection. And His promise to return! And after all these years in ministry, I believe that more strongly than ever. A church may have a beautiful building, wonderful music, and excellent programs. But if it loses its commitment to Jesus Christ and the truth of His Word, it has lost sight of its greatest purpose. So let me leave you with this challenge today. Love your church. Pray for your church. Support your church. And do everything you can to help your church remain faithful to the Word of God. Because the church belongs to the living God, and we've been entrusted with the wonderful responsibility of proclaiming His truth to a world that desperately needs to hear it.

Let's pray together. Our gracious Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful privilege of belonging to Your family. Thank You for the church of the living God and for the precious fellowship we enjoy with our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Lord, today we pray for our churches and their pastors. Help them to remain faithful to Your Word and never compromise the truth of the gospel. Father, protect our congregations from false teaching, unnecessary division, and anything that would distract us from our calling. Help us to love one another, encourage one another, and faithfully proclaim the wonderful message of salvation through Jesus Christ. And Lord, may our churches always be places where the Savior is exalted, the Scriptures are honored, and lost people are brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus. We give You all the praise and glory. For it's in the precious and wonderful name of our Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

God bless, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!
