“Receiving God's Gifts with Thanksgiving”

1 Timothy 4:4–5

Welcome to Pastor's Chat! Today, we're continuing our study through 1 Timothy chapter 4. Yesterday, we considered Paul's warning about false teachers who were attempting to impose religious restrictions upon believers. Some were forbidding marriage, while others were commanding people to abstain from certain foods. And Paul wanted Timothy to understand that these restrictions were not the measure of genuine spirituality.

Now, beginning in verse 4, Paul reminds us of something wonderful. God is the giver of good gifts, and we should receive His blessings with grateful hearts! Listen to 1 Timothy 4:4: "For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving." Now, that's a wonderful statement! Paul is reminding us that the things God has created are good when received and enjoyed according to His purposes. And this takes us all the way back to the opening chapters of Genesis. Do you remember what God said as He completed His work of creation? Genesis 1:31 tells us that God saw everything He had made, and indeed, it was very good.

Now, think about that. The world we live in is not the result of some meaningless accident. It's the creation of an all-wise, all-powerful, and loving God. And the many good things we enjoy in life are expressions of His gracious provision. Now, we must understand that Paul isn't saying every possible use of a created thing is good. God has established moral boundaries for how His gifts are to be enjoyed. But the false teachers were condemning things that God Himself had declared good. And Paul wanted Timothy to correct that misunderstanding. Now, notice that expression at the end of verse 4. "If it is received with thanksgiving." I especially appreciate those words.

You know, one of the dangers we face as Christians is becoming so accustomed to God's blessings that we begin to take them for granted. We wake up in the morning, enjoy a meal, spend time with our family, and go about our daily activities. And sometimes we forget that every one of those blessings comes from the gracious hand of God. James 1:17 reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from above. And what a wonderful truth that is! I've discovered that one of the secrets of a joyful Christian life is learning to recognize God's blessings and express our gratitude for them. And that includes the ordinary things of life. A beautiful sunrise. A meal shared with family. A conversation with a dear friend. The opportunity to worship with God's people. And perhaps most importantly, another day in which we can love and serve the Lord.

Now, look at verse 5. Paul says that these gifts are sanctified by the Word of God and prayer. The word sanctified means set apart. In this context, Paul is explaining that God's Word establishes the goodness of His provision, and prayer expresses our thankful dependence upon Him. And that's one reason Christians have traditionally paused to give thanks before eating a meal. It's not simply a religious custom. It's an opportunity to acknowledge that everything we have comes from God. And I hope we never lose that wonderful habit.

But I also want to suggest something. Thanksgiving should never be limited to the dinner table! We should cultivate a grateful heart throughout the day. Now, I know that life isn't always easy. Sometimes we experience disappointment, sickness, grief, or circumstances we simply don't understand. And Paul certainly wasn't suggesting that every experience in life is pleasant. But even in difficult circumstances, we can still thank God for His presence, His promises, and His faithfulness. Remember what Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:18? He instructed believers to give thanks in everything, because this is God's will for us in Christ Jesus. Not necessarily for every painful circumstance, but in every circumstance. And there's a wonderful difference.

So let me leave you with a challenge today. Take time to recognize the blessings of God that you may have been overlooking. And instead of focusing only upon what you don't have, thank the Lord for what He has already provided. Because a grateful heart is one of the most beautiful expressions of genuine Christian faith.

Let's pray together. Our gracious Heavenly Father, thank You for the countless blessings You have poured into our lives. Lord, forgive us for the times we've taken Your goodness for granted. Thank You for the food we enjoy, the homes in which we live, the families and friends You've given us, and the privilege of another day of life. But most of all, Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You for the salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life we have through faith in Him. Help us to develop grateful hearts that recognize Your goodness in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life. And when we face difficult days, remind us that Your love and faithfulness never change. May our lives be filled with thanksgiving and praise. For it's in the wonderful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

God bless, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!
