“Be an Example to the Believers”

1 Timothy 4:12–14

Welcome to Pastor's Chat! Today, we're continuing our study through 1 Timothy chapter 4. And we've come to a passage that has been especially meaningful to me throughout my years in ministry. In fact, I can remember studying these verses as a young pastor, recognizing that Paul's words to Timothy were just as relevant to my own life.

Listen to 1 Timothy 4:12: "Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers..." Now, remember that Timothy was a relatively young man who had been entrusted with significant responsibilities in the church at Ephesus. And apparently, his youth could have caused some people to question his authority or experience. But Paul didn't tell Timothy to demand respect simply because of his position. Instead, he told him to earn respect through the example of a godly life. And what a wonderful lesson that is!

You know, when I became senior pastor of Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church in Winchester, Virginia, in June of 1975, I was only twenty-three years old. And, as I already mentioned, I was younger than every one of our deacons! I had already been involved in helping establish that congregation, but I still had so much to learn. And I can assure you that being a young pastor carried some unique challenges. But one of the things that encouraged me was remembering that God wasn't simply interested in my age or experience. He was interested in my faithfulness. And that's exactly what Paul was emphasizing to Timothy.

Now, notice that Paul gives Timothy several specific areas in which he should be an example. First, in word. That means our speech should honor the Lord. The things we say, the way we speak to others, and even the tone of our conversations should reflect the character of Jesus Christ. Second, in conduct. Our actions should agree with what we profess to believe. You see, people may forget some of the things we say, but they'll often remember the way we live.

Third, in love. A godly Christian should demonstrate genuine concern for others. And that includes people who may not always agree with us or treat us kindly. Fourth, in spirit. Paul's emphasis is upon the attitude and disposition that characterize our lives. We should seek to demonstrate humility, kindness, and a willingness to serve. Fifth, in faith. Our lives should reflect a genuine trust in God and faithfulness to His Word. And finally, in purity. That's especially important in a world where moral standards are continually being challenged. God calls His people to live holy lives.

Now, notice something wonderful. Paul doesn't say Timothy must be an example only in his preaching. He must be an example in every area of his life. And that's a lesson for all of us. Whether we're young or old, whether we're pastors or simply faithful members of a congregation, our lives are constantly influencing other people. The question is whether that influence is drawing them closer to the Lord.

Now, listen to verse 13. Paul instructs Timothy to give attention to reading, exhortation, and doctrine.  In the context of the church, this includes the public reading of Scripture, encouraging believers, and faithfully teaching God's Word. And I believe that's one of the most important responsibilities of any pastor. A church may have wonderful music, beautiful facilities, and many excellent programs. But nothing should ever replace the faithful reading, teaching, and preaching of God's Word. Because it's through the Scriptures that we come to know the Lord and understand how He wants us to live.

Now, in verse 14, Paul reminds Timothy not to neglect the spiritual gift that had been given to him. Apparently, Timothy's calling and gifting for ministry had been recognized through prophetic instruction and the laying on of hands by the elders. And Paul wanted him to use that gift faithfully. What a wonderful reminder! God has given every believer opportunities and abilities to serve Him. And we should never neglect what He has entrusted to us.

So here's my challenge for you today. Don't allow your age, your circumstances, or your feelings of inadequacy to keep you from serving the Lord. If you're young, be an example of godliness. If you're older, continue using the wisdom and experience God has given you. And whatever your age, remember that God can use a faithful life to influence others for eternity.

Let's pray together. Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful instruction we find in Your Word. Lord, help us to be examples of godliness in our speech, our conduct, our love, our faith, and our purity. Father, I especially pray for young Christians who are seeking to serve You. Give them courage, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. And I pray for those of us who have walked with You for many years. Help us never to become complacent or neglect the opportunities You've given us to influence others. Lord, bless our pastors and Bible teachers as they faithfully read, study, and proclaim Your Word. And may every gift You've entrusted to Your children be used for Your honor and glory. Help us to finish our earthly journey faithfully, always pointing others to our wonderful Savior. For it's in the precious name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

God bless, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!
